Most of us take soils for granted – brown, dirty, dull and unchanging - usually out of sight and so out of mind. But dig a little deeper (excuse the pun!), and our soils have incredible stories to tell – of how they provide the food on our plates, the home for at least a quarter of all the species on our planet, a vital store for carbon and water and even the answer to the question of where all life on earth began.
